Selling - Listing Items for Sale

How do I list an item in Books, Music, Movies and Games?

Do you have a textbook to sell? Click here for more information about selling textbooks on Half.com.

To list an item in Books, Music, Movies, or Games, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Click Sell Your Stuff at the top of any page.

  2. Find the UPC or ISBN number of the item you want to sell. Typically, the UPC or ISBN is found above or below the barcode on the item.

Here are some examples to help you find the right ISBN or UPC number:

    • For books, enter the ISBN, not the UPC.

    • Some ISBNs end with an X; make sure you enter it as part of the ISBN.

    • While books may have more than one UPC-like barcode, each book has a single ISBN.

      • Note: Beginning January 1, 2007, all books will be identified by a 13-digit ISBN. However, you can still list books on Half.com with either the old 10-digit or new 13-digit ISBN.

    • For all items other than books, enter the UPC, and not the ISBN. Many movies, CDs, and video games have ISBNs. You should ignore these.

    • When entering UPCs, make sure you include any smaller numerals that appear to the left or right of the main barcode numerals.

  3. Type the UPC or ISBN number in the entry box and click Continue. Select a quality rating for the item, and enter amy comments you have about the item (e.g. "Cover torn, stains on the back", etc.).   You may also now enter an optional expanded description of your item which utilizes html.  This is also how you would insert an image, but this is optional.  We do not allow the addition of email addresses, links to other web sites or any other promotional endorsements in the Comments or Description field. If the item you are listing varies slightly from the description in our catalog, you must state this here. Click on the Continue button.

  4. Next, select a price for the item. Half.com will recommend a price based on the quality of the item. You can set any price you wish for your item. However, it is important to remember that the lower the price, the more likely it is to sell. Add a quantity, then click the "List Item" button and you're in business!

Once you list an item, Half.com provides the cover art, review, and product information from its extensive database. So to list your items you simply enter the item's UPC or ISBN number and Half.com takes care of the rest. Piece of cake, huh?

How do I determine the best price for my items?

Please note that the minimum price you can list an item for is $.75 (75 cents). In an effort to help you price your product competitively, we will provide you with a suggested selling price if we have retail prices available. The suggested selling price for an item is calculated as a percentage of the best on-line retail price for a new copy of the item and depends upon the quality of the item. The pricing table we use is as follows:

Condition

Suggested Price
(percentage of best on-line retail price)

Like New

50%

Very Good

45%

Good

40.0%

Acceptable

35%

For example, we suggest that you sell an acceptable quality book with a list price of $20 and a best on-line retail price of $10 for $3.50.

What if I can't find the item I want to list?

There will be times when an item you want to list will not be available in our database. In this case, it is important that you do not list it under another format or title. For example, do not list a VHS tape under a DVD listing. Buyers do not always read comments and may purchase the wrong item unknowingly.

How do I report an error in your catalog?

We do our best to make sure our catalog is up to date, but there may be listings which have incorrect product information. In this case, we want you to report these errors to us! If you find an item on our site which has incorrect product information and needs to be updated, you will find the link to submit your observations by scrolling down to the bottom of the main product page.

To report the catalog error, find the catalog update request link at the bottom of the main product page:

  • "Did you find errors in this product information? Submit a catalog update request now."

Note: You will not receive a response to these messages.  Please send only catalog repairs!  If you have additional questions please send them to Customer Service using a different subject in our Help Wizard.

How do I list an item that is not in your catalog?

We can accept requests for additions to our Catalog database in the books, music, movies, games and game systems categories. If you have an item that you would like to see added to our database please vist our Help Wizard > Selling > How can I request an Addition to the catalog?  Choose the appropriate category and enter the information requested.  You will need to have some information ready beforehand, such as:  title, ISBN or UPC, author or publisher, format, etc.

Or, to request an addition, just click here to access our Help Wizard.

What are ISBN and UPC numbers?

ISBN (International Standard Book Number) and UPC (Universal Product Code) numbers are product numbers that are used to help identify a specific product. Half.com uses ISBN numbers as another way for you to find or list an item in our Books category. It is a more precise way for you to find or list an item since each book has a unique ISBN assigned to it.

Note: Beginning January 1, 2007, all books will be identified by a 13-digit ISBN. However, you can still search for book on Half.com with either the old 10-digit or new 13-digit ISBN.

UPC codes are used for a variety of retail products. Like an ISBN, each retail product has a unique UPC code assigned to it. Half.com uses UPC codes as another way for you to find or list music or movies/DVDs.

My item doesn't have an ISBN/UPC code. Can I still list it?

No.  Items must be listed by the ISBN or UPC code printed onto the product by the manufacturer.  For items that do not have an ISBN or UPC code, we recommend that you consider listing such items on eBay.  For more information, see the Proper Category Listings Policy.

Can I sell music that is not on CD?

Our music category is for compact discs only. Regrettably, music recorded on other media, such as cassettes or LP records, cannot be sold.

Can I sell audio books on cassette?

Yes! Follow the normal "Sell Your Stuff" instructions to list an audio book.

If listing by ISBN doesn't work, follow the instructions below to list by using Search.

  1. Use Search to find the item you wish to sell. You'll be presented with a list of items that match your search. Click on the audio book listing of the item you're trying to sell.

  2. On the item detail page, click on the "Sell yours now" link at the top right of the page to start the listing process!

What if I can't find the proper format for my item?

When items come in multiple formats, it is very important that you pick the correct one when listing. In other words, paperbacks should be sold under the paperback listing and so on.

There may be times when you can't locate the proper format. This means that you won't be able to sell it right away.

We update our database often, and although the item you wish to sell does not have a matching listing right now, it may appear in the future. Thanks for your patience in the meantime!  You also might try listing your item on the eBay site.

The items I just listed are not showing in my inventory.

From time to time, the system does experience some delays in the item appearing on the site. This could be due to the high volume of items that are being listed. Items will normally take 2 hours to appear in your inventory, however it could take up to 24 hours.

The items I just listed are not showing up when I do a search.

If you are unable to find one of your items anywhere on the site, what may have happened is that a buyer has checked out with the item in their shopping cart.  After a buyer goes through checkout with an item, it is temporarily unavailable, and will remain so until the buyer's credit card has been charged. In most instances this only takes a few minutes, but in some cases it can take a little longer. During this time, the item will neither appear on the site nor in your inventory. Once the buyer's credit card has been authorized and charged, Half.com will notify you of the sale.

If the item is located in a buyer's shopping cart, but the buyer has not completed the checkout process, you won't be able to find the item in a search or be able to view it in your inventory. A buyer's shopping cart will "time out" 60 minutes from when they place their first item in the cart. If the cart "times out" or if the buyer decides against purchasing the item, it will be placed back on the site for sale, usually within 20 to 30 minutes, and will also show in your inventory once again.

How long does an item stay listed in my Inventory?

Once you list an item on Half.com, the item will remain listed on the site either until it is sold or until you remove it from your inventory. There are no time limits on items listed. For this reason, it is very important to manage your inventory carefully. If you sell an item outside of Half.com or if an item gets damaged, you will want to be sure to remove the item from your inventory before someone purchases it.

How do I delete, edit, or suspend items in my inventory?

To delete, edit, or suspend any items you currently have listed, please follow the instructions provided below:

  1. Click on the "My Account" link at the top of the page.

  2. Enter your User ID and password information on the sign-in page.

  3. Click on the "Manage Inventory" link under the "Selling" heading.

  4. Locate the item in question, and click on the "Edit", "Delete", or "Suspend" link located below it.

When you edit an item, you can amend the condition, the notes, and/or your price. After making the changes, click the "Submit" button.

If you "suspend" an item in your inventory, you can "unsuspend" the item later by following the same instructions.

How do I rate Item Quality?

Correctly assessing and representing the quality of an item is extremely important. Half.com buyers will be making purchase decisions based on quality ratings. After the sale, they will be rating their experience with each seller based in part on the accuracy of the quality ratings. Here are the guidelines for rating item quality.
